How forex profit and loss is calculated
For a long position, profit or loss is based on the exit price minus the entry price. For a short position, the calculation is reversed.
Long P/L = (Exit Price − Entry Price) × Trade Size
Short P/L = (Entry Price − Exit Price) × Trade Size
The result is initially expressed in the quote currency of the pair.
Worked example
If you buy EUR/USD at 1.1000 and sell at 1.1050 using 100,000 units, the price moves 50 pips and the estimated result is approximately $500 before trading costs.
